Tips to Winterize your Cape May Home

Cape May News, Vacation Rental News - admin - January 16, 2019

Every year we hear the horrible news about another home in Cape May that had its pipes freeze and break. The damage is usually very bad when a pipe bursts.

Here a few tips to prevent your pipes from freezing.

Leave your heat on. Do not turn your heat off. Set your heat to a temperature that you feel will protect your home from freezing.

Install wi-fi enabled thermostats to allow you to adjust your heat according to the weather. You will save money and gain peace of mind knowing your heat is set to a proper temperature.

Have your property inspected during the off-season. If you use a maintenance company have them inspect your home during the cold months.

Leave your faucets dripping. During especially cold snaps many folks recommend leaving your faucets drip slightly. This prevents the water from freezing.

Leave the cabinet doors open on your vanities and kitchen sink cabinets. This allows warm room air to warm your pipes under the cabinets.

Make sure all windows and storm windows are shut and locked

Use heat tape on pipes in your crawl space areas where your pipes are more susceptible to freezing.

Pet Friendly Rentals in Cape May

Uncategorized - admin - January 14, 2019

Travelers love to take their pets on vacation. Sometimes out of necessity and other times just love having the dog along. Cape May is a dog town. Walk down any street and your bound to see someone chatting with a dog owner walking their dog. We happen to have a breed that is not well known, a shipperkke or skipper-key as many folks call him. Funny thing about Cape May most people know what breed our dog is. That is why I find Cape May to be a dog town.

One of the great things about our town is that many rentals are now pet friendly. Owners of rentals realize that they can fill their calendars when offering pet friendly rentals. Many rentals have restrictions on pets including size and sometimes even breed. Check with the owner on any restrictions that may be in place.

All dogs need a little exercise and some rentals have fenced in yards. Also there is a great dog park located on Lafayette Street up the road a bit from the Acme.

Cape May has some great places to walk your dog. During the off season dogs are allowed on the beach and promenade. Dogs are allowed on Higbee Beach year round. Cape May requires that your dog must be leashed at all times.

So bring the pet to Cape May and maybe I will see you walking the streets. It’s always great to meet new friends while out walking the dog.

The Washington Street Mall in Cape May

Uncategorized - admin - January 14, 2019

The Washington Street Mall in Cape May is a wonderful outdoor mall with fantastic shops and restaurants. Many visitors take a slow walk through the outdoor mall along the brick lined street and enjoy all types of places to shop and eat. No bikes are allowed, only foot traffic which makes it very safe and enjoyable. Located about a block to the beach, this favorite shoppers location is open throughout the year. Visitors can browse candy stores, jewelry shops, clothing stores, and boutiques that stock unique souvenirs. Be aware that some shops do close during the off-season. Usually January thru Valentines Day or even March.

Another great feature about the mall ate the park benches that line the mall. Relax with an ice cream cone and people watch or sit beside the fountains that offer a misty breeze during the summer months. There are many restaurants offering American fare, fresh seafood and so much more.

Located right off of the mall area is the town park. During the summer months there are live concerts featuring local musicians.

Located at the beginning of the mall where Washington Street ends is the ticket booth for trolley rides. Make sure you book your rides early as the trolleys fill quickly for the day and night rides. Accross the street travelers can take a Cape May Carriage ride with beautiful horses.

When visiting Cape May, The Washington Street Mall is a must do. A stroll down the mall is a great way to spend an evening or take a break from the beach.

Cape May is a pet friendly town. Take a walk around town and you will see many pet owners walking their dogs. One of the joys of a walking a dog is meeting new friends along the way.

Things to consider when renting to guests with pets.

  1. How Many Pets?— What is the limit on the number of pets you will allow in your property.
  2. Type of Pets allowed– Dogs, Cats, Birds?
  3. Size Restrictions — Many owners set a size restriction on pets. Often condo associations that do allow pets will set a weight restriction of up to 30 to 40 pounds. Check with your insurance to see if your policy will allow pet rentals and determine restrictions that the policy may have.

How to find the Perfect Vacation Rental In Cape May

Cape May News - admin - January 9, 2019

Search Locally

Use Google or another search engine you might prefer to find a vacation rental in Cape May. Avoid the paid ads at the top of the page results. Often the ads are for national listing sites that know very little about the Cape May area. Look at the results for your search below the paid results and you will see local results. These are local vacation rental related businesses like realtors and local vacation rental listing services like Cape May Vacation Rentals. Local Cape May rental businesses many times will offer much more information about the area and the rental your interested in.

If you do find a rental on a national listing site that charges “service fees”, avoid the service fee by searching locally for the rental. Many owners list on national sites and also have their own personal vacation rental website. Search for the owners website by name. Owners often give their rental a name like ” couples retreat” or “seaside cottage”. Once you find an owners site, book through the owners site and save on service fees.

Look for discounts

It never hurts to ask an owner for a discount. Many owners will not offer discounts during the high-season but will during the slower, off-season. If you are staying for a week or longer, check to see if there is a discounted rate for extended stays.

Payment

Many owners who have websites accept credit card, personal check or paypal. Paying by check will often save the owner credit card fees.

Read your Rental Agreement

Its is very important to take the time to read the rental agreement before reserving a rental. Note that the dates are correct, check-in – check-out times, parking and more. Most importantly, review the cancellation policy. All rental agreements have cancellation policies that vary. Summer season rentals may have more restrictive cancellation policies.

Policies can vary, so be aware if you aren’t completely sure about your travel plans. Many national listing sites have standard cancellation policies: flexible, moderate and strict. Purchase cancellation protection
